The Group

Our challenge for future success combines technological innovation with respect for the environment, in a competitive and sustainable perspective

Tradition and innovation

Although Gruppo Messina was constituted in 2013, its shipping company Ignazio Messina & C. was founded in 1921 and performs regular liner services from/to Northern and Southern Europe, Mediterranean, Africa, Middle East and the Indian Subcontinent. The owned fleet consists of 8 brand new ro-ro container vessels; each ship features the newest technologies and a state-of-the-art pollution control system. Made in Italy, these ships were designed by the corporate technical department and they all sail under the Italian flag. Today Ignazio Messina & C. serves over 50 ports in 40 different countries with commercial/representative offices and controlled agencies in Italy, Europe and Africa.

This ship owner family has been operating since 1996 in the terminal sector of the Port of Genoa with Messina Terminal, renamed twenty years after Intermodal Marine Terminal (IMT). This renaming follows the Group decision to extend the professionalism and excellence of its intermodal transport services to other shipping companies. Today Gruppo Messina manages an area of 253.000 sqm., which will reach 316.000 sqm. when the filling operations between Ronco and Canepa docks are completed. IMT endures the receipt, storage, consolidation loading and unloading of all types of goods 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

An integrated logistic system of rail and road haulage, under the coordination of Gruppo Messina intermodal terminals, provides inland prosecutions to over 100 destinations.

With a staff of around 1,000 employees around the world, Gruppo Messina shows a great international vocation, along with strong Genoese roots and attachment to the territory.
Over the last few years, despite the period of global economic crisis that has hit the entire maritime sector, Gruppo Messina has placed at the heart of its industrial plan and its development strategies a considerable investment for the renewal of the owned fleet, which was completed in 2015, and the extension of its terminal services to other shipping companies; all this confirms and strengthens the 360-degree commitment to the shipowner/maritime sector, which is the core business of the Group.

Mission and values

Gruppo Messina is based on the long tradition of ship owning of Messina Family (initially they owned sailing ships for the transportation of wine), which built a small but recognized empire in the world of shipping in a little more than a century. Gruppo Messina aims to offer exclusive and cost-effective maritime services, always respecting the environment but also the societies and cultures where it operates.

The core values around which Gruppo Messina builds its business philosophy and which are intrinsic and transmitted at all levels of the Group, are: tradition, innovation, passion, respect, energy and professionalism.

“I do not draw a sharp line or any distinction between economics and ethics”
